For those who either can not leave or finish high school, there is another option available. Students can earn their GED, officially defined as “development for general education, by adopting the five tests by the American Council on Education. The GED is often informally referred to as General Equivalency Diploma, as the GED test which can be regarded as having the skills and knowledge equivalent to high school.
The GED credential was originally designed to help World War II soldiers returning to civilian employment. Many soldiers left to fight in the war before finishing high school, so when they returned, they needed a certification of equivalence to find work. After appeal, the U.S. forces at the American Council on Education for the design certification and GED is born.
To qualify for the GED, you do not already have a high school diploma. With the GED after having already graduated from high school would be pointless, because GED is legally equivalent to a high school diploma, not above.
Those who are currently enrolled in school may not graduate because it is assumed they will eventually get a degree and it is against the rules for someone to have a regular diploma and GED. The last rule is the need of our eighteen years or older to participate in trials, but in some cases, seventeen years are permitted.
Currently, there are five parts to the test total GED: social studies, science, mathematics, reading and writing. The editorial section has two parts: the first is an evaluation of organizational and mechanical skills, and the need to build a second participant test. The social section covers a range of topics, including government, economics, public history and geography. Science also covers many areas such as land, space, life and physical (physical) sciences.
Most questions in this section are accompanied by any image. Reading tests of reading comprehension section for the most part, and include both fiction and non-fiction passages. Math, along writing, has two parts, one using a calculator and one that does not work. Topics include basic math and algebra operations on numbers, functions, geometry, statistics and probability.
The GED test is extremely rigid and strict, like the SAT, because the two assessments are extremely important. Thousands of testing centers to administer the GED. Anyone wishing to take GED test must follow specific rules. Listing Requirements for the GED varies by area, but most contain some form of fees, verification of identity, and practice tests for pre-examination.
Although the official GED equivalent to high school, colleges and employers can not see it that way. In fact, some colleges do not even accept applicants who have a GED. This is because most people who get a GED high school dropouts, and is regarded as lazy or incompetent.
For some people, however, is their only option GED, as immigrant children and home schooling can not obtain traditional high school high. There are many supporters working to revise or improve the image of the GOL, in an effort to make it more acceptable certification among employers and colleges.

Career Search Adult literacy and remedial education teachers instruct adults and out-of-school youths in reading, writing, speaking English, and performing elementary mathematical calculations—basic skills that equip them to solve problems well enough to become active participants in our society, to hold a job, and to further their education. The instruction provided by these teachers can be divided into three principle categories: remedial or adult basic education (ABE) is geared toward adults whose skills are either at or below an eighth-grade level; adult secondary education (ASE) is geared towards students who wish to obtain their General Educational Development (GED) certificate or other high school equivalency credential; and English literacy instruction for adults with limited proficiency in English. Work environment. Because many adult literacy and remedial education teachers work with adult students, they do not encounter some of the behavioral or social problems sometimes found with younger students. Adults attend by choice, are highly motivated, and bring years of experience to the classroom—attributes that can make teaching these students rewarding and satisfying. Median hourly earnings of adult literacy and remedial education teachers were $43910 in May 2006. careersearch.com

The demand for adult education is growing, with 39 million American adults lacking a high school diploma. Innovative GED experts at the GED Academy have identified four crucial elements to success for adult education students. As the number of adult Americans without a high school degree nears 40 million, adult education is becoming a critical issue in the United States. GED education programs are sponsored by communities, non-profit organizations, and school districts across the country. Teaching undereducated adults is extremely challenging. Most adults who didn’t graduate high school never learned good study habits, never felt motivated to learn and never did well in a traditional classroom environment. Research shows that most adults with a low level of education are encumbered with poor self-esteem, frustration, feelings of helplessness, and dependency on others. It’s particularly important for adult learners to succeed in their experiences with the GED. Success at this stage shows students that it’s possible to succeed. The GED Academy identifies four crucial factors for success for adult learners. 1. The learner must be able to set the pace. Adult learners begin their GED preparation at various stages. They have gaps in their education that are difficult to predict and unique for each individual. Students should be able to skip materials they’re familiar with and review new material as many times as needed. Adult education must be customized to students’ needs. Spending hours on material that adults already know destroys motivation, and going too quickly over unknown material leads to frustration. 2. Interest, not content, drives learning. Students who never succeeded in school don’t find classroom materials inherently interesting. Innovative adult education programs like the GED Academy prep program use storytelling techniques, among others, to capture learners’ interest. The lessons follow a virtual GED classroom, peopled with characters that include a class clown, a single mother, and an ex-convict. Following the story of virtual students’ lives creates interest and motivation, and it helps answer the question: how is this information important to me?3. The learner needs immediate feedback. Immediate feedback on adult learners’ progress creates a sense of accomplishment, since students can see their incremental improvement. It also shows students when they need to repeat material. Many adult education students can’t assess their own learning. Immediate feedback helps build self-awareness of the learning process. 4. Success is the great motivator. Every part of the learning experience is an opportunity for success. Students who have experienced failure and frustration need to recognize each little success along the way. Through a combination of storytelling, humor, exposing the learning processes of fellow students, and providing immediate feedback, learning programs like the GED Academy prep program attempt to build a foundation of success for learners. Whatever methodology you’re using, give students a flexible study plan tailored to their needs, keep them interested, and give them immediate feedback. Really, these are the keys to the fourth element: success. Make sure they see their successes.

Sesame Street has become a cultural icon–and a proven innovator in combining education and entertainment. Today, the GED Academy combines education and entertainment for the adult learner, addressing the needs of a growing number of adults without high school diplomas.
When Sesame Street first aired in 1969, it revolutionized preschool education with its controversial integration of entertainment and education. Hundreds of studies have been done on its effectiveness, and the research shows its positive impacts ( http://www. eric. ed. gov/ERICDocs/data/ericdocs2sql/content_storage_01/0000019b/80/14/1a/bf. pdf ). Today, the United States is facing a new challenge, over 39 million adult Americans who don’t have a high school degree, and an innovative new study program is applying entertainment to the adult education field.
Interest drives education. Learning takes place inside the student’s mind. To engage that process, the student must become interested. In order to engage adult learners, the GED Academy’s GED prep program introduces a virtual classroom, where learners follow the stories of four GED students.
The virtual classroom covers GED skills, but the virtual students also spend time talking about their lives, getting into arguments, interacting with each other, and planning their futures. The stories of these characters are ones GED students can relate to. Maria is a single mother who is trying to support and raise her son. Curtis is an ex-convict who is trying to turn his life around by getting his GED. Becca is a former truck driver who injured her back and can’t drive anymore. And Dwayne is the class clown, a grown-up boy with a Peter Pan complex who delivers pizza for a living.
Most GED preparation programs simply present the material in a straightforward way. But the students The GED Academy is trying to reach don’t learn well from reading textbooks, or from a software program that’s just a textbook on the computer screen. Far from being a textbook on a screen, GED Academy lessons are animated films, like watching a movie. The main goal is to get students involved.
The storytelling works on several levels. First, students become involved with the stories of the characters and amused by Dwayne’s antics. Second, the virtual characters apply their learning to their own lives. Third, learners get to watch the virtual students think through and argue about the lessons–exposing the learning process.
Learning begins by playing. Learning begins with engagement, and entertainment. Somewhere between kindergarten and adulthood, that gets lost. Through narrative storytelling, The GED Academy is bringing the element of play back to adult education.

Over 39 million American adults lack a high school diploma, according to U. S. Census Bureau figures, and around 30 million American adults rank “Below Basic” in prose literacy, the lowest literacy ranking, according to the U. S. Department of Education’s National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL). In quantitative literacy, that number is 46 million. Even among college student, significant numbers lack prose, document, or quantitative literacy. These are startling figures. Increasingly, our world demands complex literacies. . . in problem solving, decision making, using data, and understanding information. The GED Academy has developed essential literacy education to address the complex issues of literacy for adult learners. This initiative focuses on bringing fundamental skills, including reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking skills, to undereducated adult learners. Essential literacy education is defined by three basic tenets:1. Interest and RelevanceEssential literacy education involves making the connection between learning and life skills. “Rapid changes in technology make it necessary for adults of all ages to use written information in new and more complex ways,” according to The National Survey of America’s College Students, which cites computers, tax forms, and even shopping as everyday tasks that require more and more sophisticated literacies. Showing how skills apply to real life increases motivation, and motivation is the key to learning. 2. Student-Centered LearningStudent-centered learning means that students are actively engaged in the process of creating, understanding, and connecting to knowledge. To involve students in the learning process, the GED Academy has developed a prep program that guides students through lessons in a virtual classroom. Connecting with virtual students not only activates student interest, but it also creates a student-centered environment. Learners become involved in the ways virtual students connect to and learn material. The program also includes constant student interaction to reinforce learning. 3. Customized, Dynamic CurriculumCustomizing the learning process to each unique individual is especially important for adult learners. Undereducated adult learners typically have gaps in their knowledge, and the GED Academy considers it essential for students to target their curriculum to fill those gaps. The problem for educators is that, while one student may be bored reviewing old material, another student may need extra study time on the same material. The GED Academy’s prep program is student-guided, individual study, so students can spend as much or as little time on a particular lesson as needed. Essential literacy education isn’t about just studying for a test. It’s about absorbing the skills. . . critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, the ability to think clearly. . . that will allow you to achieve more in your life. Passing the test is just a byproduct of learning.

Education pays. That’s what the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says. People with more education make more money. That’s not a big surprise. But they also are less likely to be unemployed. Who has the highest unemployment rate and lowest pay rate? People without a high school diploma. When unemployment grows, those without a high school diploma suffer most. The GED is a chance to earn a high school diploma, but more than that, it opens doors to the higher education that’s so valuable in today’s job market.

Take a look at unemployment rates in 2008. No high school diploma? The unemployment rate was 9%. Among high school graduates, it was only 5. 7%. That’s lower by more than a third. What if you earned a 2-year Associate degree at a community college? The unemployment rate was only 3. 7% among people with Associate degrees. The more education you earned, the lower your chances of being unemployed. That means education equates to jobs.

But what kind of jobs? That’s where income comes in. Among people 25 and over who had full-time jobs, the median weekly income for people without a high school diploma was $426 in 2008. With a high school diploma, it jumped to $591 a week, an increase of nearly 40%. With that 2-year Associate degree, median income $736 a week. More education equates to better paying jobs.

According to 2008 figures from the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, adults with less than a high school diploma had a 9% unemployment rate, and earned a median income of $426, among those with jobs. High school graduates had only 5. 7% unemployment, and earned $591. Those with some college who didn’t graduate had 5. 1% unemployment and earned $645. Those with an Associate degree had only 3. 7% unemployment and earned $736. Those with a Bachelor’s degree had 2. 8% unemployment and $978 weekly earnings. A Master’s degree? 2. 4% unemployment and $1,228 weekly earnings. Those with a professional degree had the lowest unemployment, 1. 7%, and weekly earnings of $1,522. Those with a Doctoral degree had 2. 0% unemployment and the highest median earnings, at $1,555 per week.

The opportunities that education gives you are too good to pass up. If you don’t have your high school diploma, look into the GED. You can get more education, and more education means more opportunity.
