Talk to the community college where you want to go. Ask them two things: 1) Can you apply before you have taken the GED as long as you are planning to take it before classes begin? 2) What is the application deadline? 3) If you don’t pass the test, will you still be able to take the first semester of classes while you study to retake it?
You may be able to be accepted on a probationary basis, but if they don’t allow you to apply until you have the GED in hand, then (assuming your skills are grade 11 or higher) go ahead and schedule your GED test at least a month before the college’s application deadline (to give you time to get the scores back).
How much preparation you will have to do for the GED depends on where your skills are right now. If you were getting good grades in regular classes and were at least a junior when you quit school, you may not have to spend a lot of time preparing. You should ask the community college if they know of an adult education program in your area. An AE program can help you assess your skills, concentrate on the areas where you need the most study, and give you advice about when you are ready to test.
Best wishes!
